is the title of this article published today, December 27, 2007 by the Expresso national newspaper, online version (http://expresso.clix.pt/Actualidade/Interior.aspx?content_id=374702). The article states that a group of residents from greater Lisbon who have discovered their Jewish roots have formed an organized Jewish community in the Ohel Jacob synagogue, founded by Ashkenazi Jews fleeing the second world war and directed by Hahaber. FIRST KOSHER PORT WINE IN THE WORLD

The Royal Wine company, founded in 1848, has produced the first kosher port wine in the world with grapes grown in the Upper Douro Valley at the Quinta do Brunheda vineyard. For the first time in 500 years, since the forced baptism of 1497, kosher products are once again being produced in Portugal such as table wines Terras de Belmonte, Sepharad and Ben Rosh(Captain Barros Basto). Olive oil labels include Ribeiro Sanches and Sefaradi. More on these products to follow.

Vem aí o vinho do Porto «Kosher»
Here comes Kosher Port wine

Empresa belga vai produzir no Douro vinho segundo as

produzido no Douro segundo as tradições judaicas,

sobretudo no mercado norte-americano.

Welcome everyone,

Ladina is an association of Sephardic Marrano culture dedicated to rescuing the memory and culture of our Jewish people who in 1497, the year of the forced baptism, constituted a fifth of the Portuguese population.
We light these candles to celebrate Hanukah, the festival of lights which comemorates the re-taking of the Temple.
We light these candles in memory of Captain Barros Basto, Apostle of the Marranos, a man of vision and courage who in the 1930s built a magnificent Jewish Cathedral of the North. He was a victim of the New State and of Catholic intregalism. He suffered an injustice and needs to be rehabilitated.
We light these candles in memory of the victims of the Inquisition, of whom 3,000 were burned, some alive, like Professor Antonio Homem, Chancelor of Coimbra University, Abbot of the Cathedral, and secret rabbi who was burned alive in 1624 at an auto de fe in Lisbon.
We also remember our people who fled the Inquisition for places incognito, such as Amsterdam, London, New York, Salonica, Venice and Brazil.
Also, in this place, we remember Gabriel da Costa (Uriel Acosta) who was born here, around the corner, on Sao Miguel Street before he fled to Amsterdam where he inspired the great philosopher Bento Espinosa (Baruch Spinoza), whose family came from Evora, Lisbon, Porto and Ponte de Lima. Uriel is the great forgotten Marrano intellectual of Porto.
We hope that in this era of tolerance, our people are able rescue their cultural and religious memory.

(Following these opening remarks, Mr. Ferrão Filipe, director of the Israeli Community of Porto and Isabel Barros Basto Lopes, granddaughter of the Captain addressed the assembled. Then rabbi Eliezer Shai Di Martiano (courtesy Shavei Israel), initiated the ceremony.)

LADINA PRESS RELEASE

HANUKKAH PUBLIC LIGHTING CEREMONY IN PORTO, PORTUGAL-FIRST TIME IN 500 YEARS SINCE THE FORCED BAPTISM OF 1497.

On Sunday December 17, 2006 at 17h30, Ladina will hold a public ceremony, lighting the 3rd candle on a giant three metre(10 feet) Hanukkahia (Menorah) in the Olival, the old Jewish quarter of Porto, Portugal. It is the first time since the forced baptism of Portuguese Jews (Sephardim) in 1497 that such a ceremony has been held in Portugal even though a great number of Portuguese people are of Jewish descent. Some historians estimate that approximately one fifth of Portugal's one million people in 1497 were forcibly converted. These Jews became known as New Christians or Marranos (ostensible Catholics with Jewish hearts).
Following the forced baptism, the King compelled intermarriage between New Christians and Old Christians so that today a majority of Portugal's population is a result of that mixture. There is virtually no anti-semitism in Portugal. Portugal was a safe haven for Jews during the second world war. According to a recent European Union survey, Portugal is the least anti-semetic country in the Union. Jewish values, traditions, and culinary habits continue to this very day in Portugal. The Catholic church has lost much of its power, unlike the days of the Inquisition when prominent Jewish intellectuals, such as Antonio Homem, chancellor of Coimbra university, head priest of the cathedral in Coimbra, advisor to the pope, but burned alive in Lisbon in 1624 for being a secret rabbi! His file in the national archives occupiesmore than 1,000 pages.
Recently, following the pioneer work of Captain Barros Basto who constructed a magnificant synagogue for Marranos in Porto in 1938 at a time when synagogues were being burned throught Europe, a Jewsih reinassance emerged in Portugal. Hardly a month goes by without a new book on Jewish history or culure. The torah was recently translated into Portuguese for the first time after 500 years. Portuguese kosher products such as olive oil and wine are now availble for the first time in 500 years. There are Marrano Returnee communities organized in Porto, Lisbon and Belmonte. There is a fledging community in the Algarve. For the first time since the pioneer work of Captain Barros Basto, the Apostle of the Marranos (see Cecil Roth, the History of the Marranos), there is a permanent rabbi (courtesy Shavei Israel) at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim synagogue in Porto, which the Captain called the Jewish Cathedral of the North!

COMMEMORATIVE HANUKAHIA DO OLIVAL AVAILABLE FROM LADINA
(hand forged, numbered, inscription in Portuguese and English)

judaica do nosso povo. (vidé www.ladina.blogspot.com ou
www.ladina-sefarad.com).
do Porto, Fundação Luís Araújo, cuja intenção é divulgar o essencial e

(Jorge Neves).

Com os melhores cumprimentos,

LADINA LETTER TO MAYOR OF LISBON

RESCUING OUR MEMORY

Portugal, Kislev, 14, 5767
m. lopes azevedo

In 1497, the year of the forced baptism, there were Jewish neighbourhoods in just about every city and town in Portugal. Some cities, such as Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra had several Judiarias, each with their own house of worship. King Manuel ordered the Judiarias dismantled, the gates taken down, the street names changed and he directed his magistrates to seize the synagogues and their contents. Many synagogues were converted to churches, others given or sold to the king`s favourites. Few examples known today are the Luso-Hebraic Abraham Zacuto museum in Tomar and the former synagogue In Evora which is now used for tourist accomodation . In Castelo Vide, the former synagogue is being transformed into a museum.
In Lisbon, there were probably five synagogues at the time (watch for Ladina`s upcoming posts on the synagogues of Lisbon before 1497) but the Great synagogue in the Judiaria Grande or Velha was the grandest of all. It even had silk upholstered benches. There is no public signage of any of the synagogues of Lisbon (except for an erroneous sign in front of the church on Rua Alfandega), or of its four Judiarias. The situation is much the same throughout the country, with a few exceptions.
Ladina is dedicated to rescuing the memory of the Portuguese Jewish people and has embarked on a campaign to persuade elected officials to identify and erect public signage in former Judiarias. It would be helpful if elected officials such as mayors, councilors and ministers were made aware of the merits of recognizing the Jewish heritage of Portugal, especially for people living in the diaspora.
Our first letter is to the mayor of Lisbon regarding a development application involving a building located at the site of one of the 10 or so former gates of the Judiaria Grande, close to the the former Great synagogue. We invite you to make your views known , and don't forget that if your Portuguese is a little rusty, English is one of the official languages of the E.U.(unfortunately Portuguese is not).

CARTA-LISBOA

O RESGATE DA NOSSA MEMÓRIA
Portugal, Kislev 14, 5767
