Porto, September 2, 2007

Over 40 people turned up on the morning of September 2, 2007 for a walking tour of Jewish Porto to celebrate European Day of Jewish culture. Following a three hour guided tour by Jorge Neves, the group retired to historic Miragaia, once the home of a thriving Jewish community before 1385, to a lunch of alheiras in honour of the Marranos who were tortured or killed by the (un)Holy office of the Inquisition. The afternoon witnessed a full house at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim synagogue featuring an exhibition at the Barros Basto musuem, short films, and a kosher buffet at the end of the evening. The launch of the new book on Barros Basto by Alexandre Teixeira Mendes took place at 18.30. For further details see www.friendsofmarranos.blogspot.com
