BARROS BASTO reinstated in the Army

Captain Barros Basto will be reinstated in the Portuguese army, after being separated from service in 1937 by anti-Semitic motives. The decision was made today, unanimously by all political parties. The National Defence Committee said Barros Basto was punished for acts that "directly relate to the regular practice of his religion" and that he was the target of a process which, “translates into a case of persecution and religious discrimination. "
The PSD and the CDS (which together form a majority, but enjoy the support of other parties) agreed to draft a resolution in order to symbolically reintegrate into the army the officer who was a victim of anti-semitism.

Two weeks ago, the Commission for Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees rehabilitated the good name of Barros Basto, stating that he:
"was separated from the army due to a general atmosphere of animosity against him motivated by the fact that he was a Jew, of not hiding it, but rather, to the contrary, energetically proselytizing and converting Portuguese Jewish Marranos and their descendants. "

O capitão Barros Basto vai ser reintegrado no exército português, depois de ter sido separado do serviço, em 1937, por motivos antissemitas. A decisão foi tomada hoje, por unanimidade entre todos os partidos políticos, na Comissão de Defesa Nacional, que declarou que Barros Basto foi punido por factos que se «relacionam diretamente com a prática regular da sua religião» e que o processo de que foi alvo «se traduz num processo de perseguição e discriminação religiosa».
O PSD e o CDS (que juntos, formam maioria, mas que gozam do apoio dos demais partidos) comprometeram-se a elaborar um projecto de Resolução com vista a reintegrar simbolicamente no exército o militar vítima de antissemitismo.
Há duas semanas, a Comissão de Assuntos Constitucionais, Direitos, Liberdades e Garantias já havia procedido à reabilitação do bom nome de Barros Basto, tendo declarado que ele «foi separado do exército devido a um clima genérico de animosidade contra si motivado pelo facto de ser judeu, de não o encobrir, e, pelo contrário, de ostentar um proselitismo enérgico convertendo judeus portugueses marranos e seus descendentes”.
